What’s the best wedding cake to choose if I have 200 guests?
Congratulations! With so many choices for wedding cakes the decision can be daunting. Knowing how many slices you want out of your wedding cake is a good place to start, and then based on your theme, colours, venue, personality, and of course budget; the shape(s) and finishing touches can be designed.
A wedding of 200 guests will be in a large room with at least 20 tables spread out so you want your cake to be large and tall enough to be seen from every table in the room, that way no one misses out on that all-important cutting of the cake ceremony! Bearing this in mind you will need at least 5 tiers if going for rounds: a 14”, 12”, 10”, 8”, 6”, all baked to a minimum of 4” height, (regular cakes are baked to 3” height) and covered perfectly with fondant to give it an elegant look. If you prefer squares, then 4 tiers would do. These can be stacked or placed with separators to give it an even taller look. Be sure it sits on a befitting cake stand too.
For the finishing touches, you want details, it doesn’t matter if subtle or imposing – go with your taste, but detailing is essential because 5 tiers is a lot of cake and it could look ‘blah’ if it is not finished tastefully. A current feature is the edible lace; which goes with vintage, elegant or sophisticated wedding themes. It says “I am bold, and I am beautiful”. Having an off white cake, say champagne or ivory fondant with white lace on top will show off the details. Finish this off with some pearls around the tiers, a broach on the third tier and some bold flowers on top and by the side. For a more striking look, having contrasting colours – say pastel pink with white lace or bold navy blue with gold lace will work well on a large cake. Edible lace can be made in most colours and there are various lace patterns available.
The most exciting part to having a 5 tiered large cake is that you can have 5 different cake flavours…yippee!
Whatever you do, make it about you…it’s your wedding!
